Certain Excluded Areas of Work
The firm does not undertake any family work, probate or sale and purchase of real estate work. Apart from these three practice areas, the firm may be prepared to undertake work after an initial conference with the prospective client; essentially this will be a fact gathering process and a matching of the firm’s expertise with the requirements of the proposed work. Glen also does not supply legal services in English law which are a “reserved legal activity” as defined under the Legal Services Act 2007 (UK).

Engagement
Once we are satisfied that the firm can take on the proposed work, in the case of work which requires Court representation, a warrant to act will need to be signed by the client. The firm will also provide the client with an engagement letter wherein the full scope of the client-firm relationship will be set out, including the payment of costs. On occasion, where the work is not of a substantial amount and does not require Court representation, the firm’s engagement may be obtained by way of simple written communications, such as in emails.
Fees and Disbursements
Whether the work involves dispute resolution or transactional work, the firm will usually provide an estimate of costs when reasonably practicable. However, the firm has two principal modes of quoting for a defined scope of works. First, by a fixed fee for specified scope of work. The work may be specified by having obtained (although not contingent upon) a result, or reaching a stage of proceedings. Second, it may be a fee based on a fixed charge out rate per hour for work done.
The firm would usually obtain a security deposit on account of costs and disbursements. The security deposit is held by the firm to account of the client and used to set-off any outstanding charges which are owed to the firm.
It is important to note that the fees mentioned above do not include disbursements. Disbursements are charges incurred which are incidental to the work which is done, for example, Court filing fees, postage and printing. These have to be separately and additionally paid for by the client to fees.
